One challenge when creating any new special material for our weapon skins is authoring it in a clean way so that other artists can take and use it for other gun skins in the line, or building on top of it for an entirely new skin. OK, going to get technical here for a sec. We experiment with creating these custom materials when we feel that they will add a nice visual bump to our skins.Īfter studying the concept to understand how I wanted to translate it to the final 3D in-game model, I decided that having the Black Mist effect flowing inside of the crystal material would be a great thematic tie-in to the larger Ruination set, and would hopefully be really hype to look at too. Through an interesting combination of some light math and 2D painted textures, an artist is able to create some unique special materials, like the Black Mist effect. Materials here refers to a custom shader built inside of Unreal Engine Material Graph. I was even able to utilize one of his textures for the custom material I was making, which in the end, saved time and made the gun skin feel more cohesive! Right away I worked with our team’s FX artist to learn about the signature shapes that make up the Black Mist effect. I knew we had to create something that the League team (and you) would be excited for while also satisfying VALORANT players (like myself) who don't know the first thing about League. Although VALORANT doesn’t occupy the same space as League of Legends, it was a fun opportunity to bring the “Black Mist” that is taking over Runeterra to our weapons.īringing this theme to life offered an interesting challenge: How do we visualize the Black Mist within the crystal while preserving both the competitive integrity of the weapons and creating something that fits within our tight performance constraints? Sentinels of Light is Riot's big summer event, bringing the “Ruined” and "Sentinel" thematics to each of our games. Now that both League of Legends crossover skins are in-game, the team wanted to share how we got Ruination and Sentinels set off the ground, as well as how we used this as an opportunity to develop new “materials” for VALORANT skins. I last wrote about how our team collaborated to build the tech behind the Spline skins. 10.Hi again everyone! I’m Chris Stone, a weapons artist on the VALORANT Premium Content team. Sentinels of Light will have different schedules for each of Riot’s games, which you can find here, but the overall event will run from July 8 until Aug. The first is Ruination, which is live now, and the second is Sentinels, which will go live later this month. Riot is also releasing two Valorant skin bundles as well. The new patch will replace Shadow Items with Radiant Items, as well as add new Champions, Origins, and Classes to the game.īut the Sentinels of Light event doesn’t just stop with the League universe. The event will also include the Declare Your Allegiance Event Pass, where players can choose to fight for the Sentinels or the Ruined King.įinally, Teamfight Tactics will introduce its midseason patch, called Reckoning: Dawn of Heroes. Legends of Runeterra will introduce its second Champion Expansion, which will include Viego, Akshan, and 21 other new cards. All of this will also come with a variety of in-game content including the exclusive Battle Academia Akshan skin. Wild Rift will also get a special comic and AR experience to explore areas of Runeterra. In Wild Rift, players will join forces with champions like Lucian, Senna, Riven, Irelia, Vayne, and Akshan to help ward off the Ruination. Wild Rift will also get its own unique in-game story. The event will also include a new limited-time game mode, called Ultimate Spellbook, which will give players a second Ultimate ability to use, as well as their champion’s usual one. The event will also add 11 new in-canon skins to the game, as well as the Ascended Pantheon Prestige Edition skin. League of Legends is also getting an in-client story experience that casts players as a rookie Sentinel attempting to stop the Ruination that’s encroaching on Runeterra. Not only is he League of Legends’ newest champion, he’s also coming to League of Legends: Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and Teamfight Tactics over the course of the event. The star of this event is Akshan, the Rogue Sentinel. The event is called Sentinels of Light, and on Thursday the developer revealed what’s coming to each game. For the first time ever, Riot Games is hosting an in-game event that will impact all of its released games at the same time.
